First Zone Conference

   

The Lusaka Zone is the largest in the mission. Don’t you love seeing all these happy faces? Of course what 18-21 year old isn’t happy when he/she is eating!

My responsibility for Zone Conference was to cook!! So roast, potatoes and carrots was the main coarse. The USA missionaries loved it…not so much the African missionaries. But all express gratitude! 

If anyone has suggestions on what to feed 26 or so hungry missionaries, I’m all up for suggestions!! I’m serious in this request!!! Crock pot meals are best because the meeting places do not have kitchens or refrigerators and we have to transport the food.

A funny thing happened while Sister Hales and I were making the gravy: we stirred and stirred and stirred the gravy, waiting for it to thicken. Sister Hales even went to the grocery store while I kept stirring. Finally, after a long time, we decided the gravy was thick enough so we turned the stove down to one. Within seconds the gravy started to boil! Everything in Zambia is backwards…including the controls on the stove! One is high…six is low!! Who would have thought?

    I'm going to be thinking, Janis, on what to suggest that you can cook. I'm not very good at cooking in really BIG amounts--other than Spaghetti or Mashed Potatoes....stuff like that. And I'm sorry to say--I do not use a crockpot very often at all., so I don't have any ideas on what to make in that. (I sure am enjoying your writings and pictures, though!!) :)

D&C 84:88    Eleven missionaries were traveling from Malawi to Lusaka, Zambia, in two separate vehicles on 2 January 2023. It was about 1:00-1:30 in the afternoon; it was raining so the roads were a little bit slick, even though it was very warm. They were coming around a curve when an oncoming car was in their lane. Elder Masengere swerved to avoid a head on collision. The side of the road had a small embankment, large enough that it flipped the Ford Ranger over that five missionaries were in.                                         Jessica wrote, “We held a “surprise” party in the construction zone of our house. 😂. It was the only way we could keep the secret of my parents getting a mission call. Everyone was surprised. I’m  the only one who knew it was coming cause I saw a letter one day early in January on the kitchen table. So I planned the party😁. I made the puzzle map of the U.S. cause me and my parents thought it would definitely be a states mission. But…they are going to Zambia (in Africa)😅. I don’t know who is going to be more shell shocked- my mom or my dad. If you know my mom, she does not like big adventures away from home. This will definitely be the ride of their life!”

Lots of good-byes

Starphel made going away matching clothes for Hal and I. She did a nice job on choosing the fabric! She was simply beaming when she saw we wore them to church today! After speaking in one Sacrament meeting and bearing our testimonies (by invitation) in the other ward we took advantage of the one hour block and took lots of pictures. The Quero family...well, at least some of them. Brother Quero, Kevin and Lianah. Lianah is preparing paper work for going on a mission. Sister Quero and their other daughter, Shaniah, are still in the Philippines.   Jennifer, one of my piano students who quit coming because of the conflict of time because of her school.
