Tithing and Temples

This is Charity Mwango.

In Relief Society Charity bore her testimony of paying tithing and temple attendance. With her permission I would like to share her story here.

Charity was quite young when her husband passed away.  When she learned of eternal families from the missionaries later in her life, her interest spiked and she soon joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  When she learned about tithing she knew it was something she should do so she began paying her tithing.

Charity really wanted to go to the temple and be sealed to her late husband but the temple was so far away and she didn't have money to spare.  The closest temple was in Johannesburg, South Africa, some 800 miles away! Even though she had a pretty good job working for the government, it was mostly hand to mouth, day to day...meaning what she barely made enough to meet her expenses each day.

After some time, Charity felt impressed to take a 60 day leave of absence from her job. This meant no money for 60 days! Her friends all thought she was crazy!!! "Why are you doing this?" But Charity followed through with her impressions.

The day before her leave of absence was to begin another acquaintance came to her and said, "knowing your qualifications, would you come and work for me for the next two months?" So she did.

This acquaintance helped take care of abandoned babies here in Lusaka. At the end of the two months Charity was paid exactly what her job would have paid her plus just enough extra to fund her trip to the temple!!

Her faith was incredible! She is always smiling, just like you see in the picture.

This is a group from the Kasungu Branch in Malawi. Their branch was started just a couple of years ago and they have been working ever since to go to the temple in Johannesburg, 800 miles away.
A couple of weeks ago 26 members of the branch finally made it happen. Knowing just a little of some of the conditions in this very poor country, I can only imagine some of the sacrifices they had to make in order to get to the temple.
