House checks

 


One of Elder Phelps' responsibilities is over housing. Once a transfer we do cleaning checks...that's where I try to assist. Sometimes we just do video calls but occasionally we visit the flats in person. I thought I would post a few pictures of our last round of house checks.


Some of the flats we visited were down dirt ("dust") roads. The one on the right was a rough road about a mile long.

 

Another road leading up to a flat. The GPS may or may not lead you to the right place. We have to call the missionaries to announce our arrival and then they will open the gate.

One of the neighbors raises chickens.


 Hanging the laundry out to dry. I guess the most convenient place was their living room area. Why not? No other furniture was in there!


This flat had neighbor's who were growing this huge garden. It was very nice! Lots of tomato plants!


 

Elder Phelps is being shown around by one of the missionaries and a study area.

 

             A bathroom and a bedroom. There are always bars on all of the windows.

   

                            A couple of front entrances. Obviously some apartments are better than others.

The missionaries sleep under mosquito nets, if they choose to. We are also working on getting the mattresses off of the floor.

 

                  Very worn out furniture. We are working on getting the worst of them replaced.

This was actually quite pretty. It is just inlaid tile. I haven't seen carpet in any apartment...including member homes.  Occasionally, there might be a rug or two.


 Nice bathtub. I'm not sure why they don't finish a job though. The dark spot at the bottom of this picture is just a hole. 


That may be boring, but this is just a sampling of what we deal with. Faulty, unfinished plumbing; doorways that do not fit the doorway so there are gaps around the edges; kitchen cupboards that won't close because the doors have not been cut right to fit in the space, to name a few. The people really do have some nice ideas but they just don't follow through and finish a job and the quality is severely lacking.

    This little cutie is Mary. I didn't catch the name of the baby that is crying. When the Pease left, they asked if Elder Phelps and I could visit a couple of Humanitarian Projects to see how the work was coming along.  Yesterday we made that adventure.  The GPS pins the Pease gave us were not quite accurate (surprise, surprise). We ended up in the middle of nowhere!                                             Fortunately however, there were a couple of very nice ladies who spoke a tiny bit of English who agreed to take us to the Chinkuli school.  They, along with two young babies, climbed into the back seat of our truck (Sister Wilkinson and Sister Hatch were already in the back seat)! Angels Round About Them

  "I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up." D&C 84:88    Eleven missionaries were traveling from Malawi to Lusaka, Zambia, in two separate vehicles on 2 January 2023. It was about 1:00-1:30 in the afternoon; it was raining so the roads were a little bit slick, even though it was very warm. They were coming around a curve when an oncoming car was in their lane. Elder Masengere swerved to avoid a head on collision. The side of the road had a small embankment, large enough that it flipped the Ford Ranger over that five missionaries were in. Elder Masengere, Elder Wantoe, Elder Church, Sister Ward, and Sister Keitirile. The flipped car did not roll, but spun around and slid on its top on the pavement. The on coming car just sped away! Immigration

We got up early this morning so we could be at the immigration office by 6:00 AM! The office didn’t open until 8:00 but we came early so we could stand in this line and hopefully be one of the first to get in. Typical of government offices (we think it is bad in the US, it’s worse here), there were a lot of people (employees) standing around and only one or two people actually doing any work! I was told to go to one desk, but after standing there for a minute or so the lady “working” there looked up from her phone, glared at me, then told me to go to a different desk! Not too friendly here or maybe they just don’t love their work! Anyway, we got our permits to stay here. One of my responsibilities will be to bring the missionaries here when they come into the country and go through this same process! About once a month. Not really looking forward to this. Not the greatest picture here but oh well, it is what it is.
