The Allen’s
There are three couple missionaries in the mission. The Allen's and the Sullivan's both serve in Malawi so we don't usually have a lot of interaction with them other than an occasional message on WhatsApp. However, the Allen's got to come to Lusaka a couple of weeks ago so it was a real treat to spend time with them!
We took advantage of going out to eat with friends! Besides, we worked long hours and there wasn't time to cook. I didn't think they would appreciate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for their supper. Actually, eating out is not too bad, price wise. Maybe $6-$15 per plate, depending on what you order.
The Allen's are a dynamic couple; lots of fun! They are serving as Member Leadership Support so they told us a little bit about what they do. They have been having marriage classes with some of the couples in Kasungu. When they first started, all the men sat on chairs and the women sat on the floor. Elder Allen quickly informed them that they should have more respect for the women so the women should be sitting on the chairs and the men on the floor. He told them that if they didn't follow that directive then he would not invite them to their home again! He has never had to bring up the subject again!😊
One of their favorite games to play is Pictionary! The Allen's said the couples LOVE that game!! Life really is quite simple here and it doesn't take much to help people be happy.
You can't leave Lusaka without a couple of hours at Chaminuka! So we went there prior to taking the Allen's back to the airport.
Ostrich's are huge and they just mosey along side the car. They walk so close sometimes that I wonder if my window was down if they would just poke their heads in the window and peck me!!
We saw kudu, impala, giraffes, zebras, elephants, birds, and probably a bunch of others that I can't name. Lots of termite hills!
It was a fun week, even amongst the work. I think they appreciated the diversity of mingling with another couple and also getting to understand the dynamic of the mission as a whole.
I have never been this close to a cheetah before either. Glad there was a fence! The guide told us that they were getting ready to feed them so they were pacing the fence line. They feed them 3-4 chickens twice a week. That's it. So wonder this cheetah is so skinny! The only animals behind fences were cheetahs and lions. All of the other animals were roaming free.
